Theodora Stathopoulos, conductor

The FACE Symphony Orchestra is Montreal's only apprenticeship orchestra aiming at educating and developing young musicians by combining young teachers, serious amateurs and talented students. Since it's inception in September 1998, by its conductor Theodora Stathopoulos, the educational program of the FSO has brought together FACE school's most talented instrumentalists (some as young as 10 years old) serious musicians from other Montreal schools, colleges and universities as well as young performers and teachers from the province of Quebec and abroad. This interaction between the more advanced musicians and the young talented students diminishes the gap between the former and the latter and provides the students with opportunities to discover and realize their full potential in a secure yet challenging environment.

Although a "young" orchestra, the FSO has performed over 100 concerts since 1998 in some of Montreal's most prestigious venues - Place des Arts, Notre Dame Basilica, Salle Claude Champagne, Laval's André Mathieu Hall, Oscar Peterson Concert Hall, Olympic Stadium, Le Palais des Congrès, Saidye Bronfman Center, Montreal's City Hall and churches St Jean Baptiste, St Joachim, St. Laurent and St. Denis.

The Orchestra performs several concertos yearly to provide visibility and experience to talented young students and concentrates on, at least, 2 full scale works per season-works that require large numbers of instrumentalists, soloists and choral groups in an effort to involve as many capable musicians as possible so that they may experience the symphonic repertoire. As well, the FACE Symphony Orchestra has featured among others, internationally acclaimed artists, such as trombonist Alain Trudel and guest conductors Iwan Edwards and Yuli Turovsky.

« …here was a secondary level ensemble … moving through it (Prokofiev's Fifth) with momentum and confidence … They say that music training in the public school system is horrible, FACE has proudly made an exception of itself. »
